How to Prepare for a Lifeline Screening

Lifeline screenings are preventative screenings that can give the person being screened an idea of their general health and well-being. Also, on the other side, it can alert the patient of anything that may have the potential for becoming life-threatening and what they will need to discuss with their primary care physician as soon as possible for recommended plan of treatment in order to prevent any life-threatening situations from occurring.

Most lifeline screening don’t require you to fast or do any sort of preparation at all. The only requirement is that you wear loose-fitting clothing, with a short-sleeved t-shirt or blouse, in order to get a blood pressure cuff on your arm to get an accurate blood pressure reading. However, certain tests do require some extra preparation.

Below are examples of tests requiring special preparation, and what must be done to prepare for these Lifeline Screenings.

“6 for Life Package”

The night before your lifeline screening, (6 for Life Package) be sure to fast for six hours, this will give a more accurate reading on all test results. Be sure to wear a short-sleeved shirt, or at least if you wear long-sleeves, be able to easily roll-up the sleeves in order for blood pressure cuff to fit snug around your arm.

“Glucose–Type 2 Diabetes”

If you are getting glucose testing done, it is necessary for you to fast for eight hours prior to getting this type of screening.

“Full Lipid Panel/High Cholesterol”

“Atrial Fibrillation or Stroke”

A lifeline screening that screens for the possibility Atrial Fibrillation or Stroke requires a little more preparation; such as, women should not wear any panty hose, do not wear any type of body oils or lotions, don’t wear a watch and be sure to turn off your cell phone, and most important, wear a comfortable two piece outfit of loose clothing.

“Abdominal Aortic Anuerism”

Wear comfortable two-piece outfit of loose clothing; fasting four hours prior, with a small meal,(less than half what you would normally eat, non-gassy foods). You may have a half cup coffee or tea, and minimal water, if thirsty during the fasting period. Make sure to continue taking all medications as prescribed. (If diabetic, and fasting for four hours makes you nervous, just limit meals to a “diabetic” meal, such as a piece of toast and a cup of juice or coffee).

The examples listed are some of the more severe Lifeline testings that require preparing for, in most cases, when you schedule for Lifeline screening, you won’t need to prepare for it at all.
